Pinnacle Studio 12 Mega Internet
I started using Pinnacle Studio around the time it first came out (version 5 or 6). I upgraded a couple of times and just quit using Pinnacle out of protest for bad products that never worked quite right. System crashes, sound syncronization problems, hours and hours of painstaking editing followed by hours of rendering which then produced an unusable 'coaster'. It was maddening! Each successive Pinnacle Studio version had such a great interface while always holding the lure of such promise that I kept upgrading and buying add-ons in the hope that Pinnacle would correct their troubled software. As I noted above, however, out of frustration and quiet protest, I just quit using Pinnacle Studio around version 8. I was not going to keep rewarding Pinnacle with my money.

After Pinnacle Studio 8 I tried a variety of different video programs: Microsoft, Ulead, and a couple different versions of Adobe Premiere. In my opinion, none of those had the simplicity combined with the power of Pinnacle. Hence, my pile of HI-8 tapes languished in a big box as I kept adding more and more video tapes while growing increasingly concerned that if my Sony HI-8 video camera ever gave out I'd be hard pressed to get all our family tapes edited and on disk. (No HI-8 camcorder means no way of transferring to digital.) After hearing good things about Pinnacle 12, and in part out of growing desperation, I bought Pinnacle Studio 12 Plus. I'm pleased to say that this version of the software has thus far worked very well for my purposes.
I am on a roll now and am getting all my HI-8 tapes edited and transfered with none of the problems I experienced in previous versions. I do not have an HD video camera so I cannot speak to the efficacy of that, but I am just so pleased that this version seems to live up to all the promise that previous versions held but failed to produce. Pinnacle Studio 12 works. I've owned 2 previous versions, and they worked very well for making dozens of Standard def DVDs.
I got this upgrade for BluRay movies, (and got the fastest i7 computer). Unfortunately this new version often crashes during saves. It freezes up for 3-5 minutes at a time. My computer has 12 Gig of memory, but this program never uses more than 1 Gig, and does a huge amount of disk swapping, (Takes a few minutes to jump from end of movie to beginning; 3 seconds to respond to moving the edit markers with files on normal speed Western Digital Green drive, 1.5sec for files on fastest WD Velociraptors). This program is not yet ready for full-HD movies, it is painfully slow. However if you use it for standard def DVDs, it is OK, even on a slower computer.
The fancy root menu animations never worked, (threw out a lot of DVDs trying); but OK with simple text titles in the root menu. Maybe I'm strange, but I like to create title sequences, credit rolls, and custom menues for my DVDs. For years, Studio has been the only affordable software that offered me these capabilities. Studio 12, in addition to all its other shortcomings, is now unable to render text in full resolution -- so any text that appears on the screen -- titles, subtitles, credits, whatever -- is blocky and jaggy. Moving text is even worse. After three weeks of describing this problem to various tech functionaries I finally reached the breaking point and DEMANDED that my problem be escalated to a supervisor.
That person (to whom I had to describe the problem again -- Tech Support doesn't seem to create a 'file' for you when you contact them) immediately informed me that this was a 'known issue' and that the 'engineers were aware of it' but that there was 'no current information available' as to whether or not they intended to do anything about it! At that point I was offered a refund of the purchase price. Think twice before purchasing this application. I used this software back when it was at Versions 7 and 8, and switched to Ulead's VideoStudio because I found it to be less crash-prone.
